Prestige PAF 1.0 Air Fryer Review

Prestige is one of the most trusted brands in India. Their products are definitely of better quality compared to its domestic competitors and that is the reason why Prestige was adjudged as one of the most trusted brands in India in 2015.

Now, coming to their air fryers, Prestige presently has two models of air fryers- Prestige PAF 1.0 Air Fryer and Prestige PAF 2.0 2.2 L Air Fryer. Both are definitely great in terms of performance and features, but Prestige PAF 1.0 wins hands down for its superior features compared to the rest of the competitors.

In this review of Prestige PAF 1.0 Air Fryer, we will discuss about its pros, cons, why it is amazing, general complaints and maintenance.

Why We Love It?

  • Digital Display
While all other air fryers in this price range have knobs to control the timer and temperature, Prestige Air Fryer has a digital display and touch responsive panel to adjust the timer and temperature. Through this control panel, you can also choose the preset menus for cooking fries, meat and fish.

    • Free accessories
While buying Prestige PAF 1.0 Air fryer, you get along with it a cake baking tin and a food separator. No other air fryer in the market gives free cooking accessories along with it. When you think about it, these accessories are pretty essential to make the maximum out of an air fryer. While a food separator saves time and helps cook two different varieties of food at the same time, a baking tin is necessary for making cake and muffins in it.
    • Advanced Features
Prestige PAF 1.0 Air Fryer has advanced features compared to the rest of air fryers in this price range. The temperature setting ranges from 60 to 200C, whereas most air fryers have a range of 80-200C. The in-built digital timer can be set for up to 60 minutes, unlike the rest of air fryers which can be set up till 30 minutes. The Prestige Air Fryer also has preset menus that automate the cooking process.

Pros

  • Budget Friendly
Considering the value of the product, that is the features of Prestige PAF 1.0 and the additional accessories that come along (which would cost around Rs. 2000 when bought separately), it is definitely a budget friendly option.
  • Portable
Prestige Air Fryer weighs around 6 kg. It has a study carry handle and the cord length is 1.5 meter, making it a great portable appliance. So, now you do not have to miss your favourite show for preparing delicious crunchy evening snacks!

Cons

  • Inner paint flaking off
One of the complaints seen in reviews in major shopping sites is that the paint of the inner cooking chamber of the air fryer is flaking off. It is true that it is not found in every device, however, even if its rare, such incidence can render the product useless. (We checked with 3 of our acquaintances who have been using Prestige Air Fryer for a period ranging from 4 months to 1 year, none reported such an issue.)
  • One Year Warranty
Most of the air fryers available in the market comes with 2-year warranty. Considering that, the one-year warranty that Prestige offers is definitely a negative. However, as Prestige has a number of service centers across the country, so getting your air fryer repaired in case of a defect is easy.

General Complaints And Possible Solutions

Complaints mentioned below are not specific to Prestige Air fryer, but rather general complaints about air fryers. Wherever possible, solutions to avoid the problem are also mentioned.

  • Unable to cook beyond fries
A general complaint usually seen on shopping site reviews is that the device cannot be used for cooking anything beyond fries. But that is not quite true. For the initial uses, you will have to keep a close watch on the food inside the air fryer and apply enough oil on the food to get the desired browning.
However, keep in mind that you cannot cook anything in liquid consistency in the air fryer. So, you might want to make solid batter for the food you cook in air fryer.
You can also check the recipe book that comes along with the appliance for ideas and inspiration.
Prestige PAF 1.0 Air Fryer Review
  • Uneven cooking
In order to ensure even cooking of food, shake the basket frequently. Air fryers are not as hands-off as the companies claim.
Also, do not stuff the basket with too much food. The hot air has to pass and circulate through the food. So, try to cook at a time food of quantity 20-30% less than the mentioned capacity so that it is evenly cooked.
  • Food loses moisture
Food usually gets dehydrated when you apply too less oil on the food or when you cook it for too long. Fish and meat has natural fat and hence the only reason why it loses moisture is because of over cooking. For fries, you will have to apply enough oil to ensure that they come out crispy on the outside and soft and tender inside. (Please note that applying too much oil will make the food lose its crispness too.)
Till you get a hang of it, keep a constant watch on the food you put in the air fryer to prevent burning and over cooking.
  • Food is not crispy
Ensure that you have preheated the air fryer for 3 minutes.
Vegetables generally do not become crisp even in a deep fryer. Other than that, if you cook high fat content food, it will not be crispy enough.
Lightly brush meat and fish with oil.
For home made snacks, add oil to the breadcrumbs for making it crispy.
Also take care to shake the basket frequently while cooking.

General Care

  • Always spray oil to the basket before cooking so that food does not get stuck to the basket.
  • Always preheat the appliance for 3 minutes.
  • Prestige recommends cooking 100gm to 500gm food at a time in the air fryer. Cooking more than the recommended quantity may harm the device. Also, over stuffing the basket would result in uneven cooking.
Prestige PAF 1.0 Air Fryer Review
  • As for cleaning, remove any food particles stuck to the basket or the pan and soak it in warm soap water for at least 30 minutes before scrubbing it with a non-abrasive brush/scrub.
Ensure that you clean the air fryer only after it cools down(it will take at least 30-45 minutes for the air fryer to cool down. )

Value For Money

When you compare apples to apples, the competing product offering similar features is Philips HD 9230/26 (its features are better than Prestige PAF 1.0 though) and it costs more than twice of what Prestige PAF 1.0 Air Fryer costs. Moreover, Prestige provides additional cooking accessories along with the Air fryer. When you buy it online, you can get a 30% discount on its MRP too. Hence, you can very well say that Prestige PAF 1.0 offers the best value for money spent.

General complaints and possible solutions

  • Food drying out

Pigeon Air Fryer Review

Pigeon air fryer is one of the best economic air fryers available in the market today. Just like every other air fryers, Pigeon also has a cooking chamber with a heating element. Super heated air is circulated through the cooking chamber to evenly cook the food ( same as Philip’s patented rapid air technology).

In this review,  we will go through the features, pros and cons, general complaints and its solutions.

Why we love it?

  • Useful Features
Useful features of Pigeon Air fryer includes auto cut off, 30 minute timer, temperature control between 80 to 200 degree Celsius.
  • Versatile
Just like every other air fryer, you can make a variety of healthy food and snacks in Pigeon air fryer. The company claims it to be especially suitable for Indian food. However, to make that possible, it doesn’t seem to have any special features that no other air fryer has.
    Pigeon Air Fryer Review
  • Healthy
The USP of air fryer is oil-less cooking. Pigeon delivers on this promise spot on. As all dishes can be cooked with one Tbsp. Oil or less, the end results are tasty and healthy food
  • Economical
This seems to be the main point of attraction of Pigeon Air Fryers. The MRP of pigeon air fryer is almost half that of Philips. This makes it a deal impossible to resist.

Pros

  • Higher capacity
Pigeon air fryers have a fairly good capacity. They have two models- one has capacity of 2.2 l and the other has capacity of 3.2 l. Weight wise that would be 800gm and 1200gm respectively. Philips HD9220 on the other hand has a capacity of 2.2 litre.
  • Lower power consumption
Pigeon Super AF2.2 consumes power of 1350 W, which is lower compared to Philips HD9220.
Pigeon’s air fryer with 3.2 litre capacity consumes 1500 W.
Compared to other brands available in the market, Pigeon has the most energy-efficient air fryers.

Cons

  • No recipe book
When using a new appliance like air fryers, a detailed manual and recipe book is quite necessary to guide a user. But unfortunately, Pigeon doesn’t provide a recipe book. Their manual is not as detailed as Philips. The only saving grace is that the range of temperature setting for different types of food is mentioned in it.
    Pigeon Air Fryer Review
  • Brand reputation
Pigeon in general has a brand image of not producing durable products. Though price wise they are dearth cheap, it is often at the price of durability. A number of reviews online suggest that the plastic handle is not as sturdy as needed.
  • No pan in certain versions
The pigeon air fryer we used had a pan and attached basket to place the food for cooking. However, when we went through a few videos of product un-boxing, we could find that they did not have a pan. In such cases, aluminium foil will have to be lined at the bottom of the device for easy cleaning. Also, special care will have to be taken while taking the basket out after cooking as excess fat could drip from the basket on your counter top or even your hands.
  • Lack of accessories
Philips, being pioneers in air fryers, sell a number of accessories suitable for its air fryers. However, most of the other companies like Pigeon are not specialised in well go air fryers and hence do not sell accessories like baking pan, food separator etc.

General Complaints And Possible Solutions

As it is low on price, expectations are also minimal.  However, common problems reported through reviews on shopping sites are-
  • Food drying out
Food usually gets dehydrated when you apply too less oil on the food  or when you cook it for too long.
    Pigeon Air Fryer Review
  • Durability of handle
Certain reviews suggest that the handle of the air fryer is not quite durable. In order to prevent any troubles, do not put more food than the mentioned capacity.

Value For Money

Considering that you can buy two Pigeon air fryers at the cost of one Philips air fryer, Pigeon is definitely pocket friendly when you buy online. But given the price, do not expect the same quality and durability as that of Philips. If you are on a tight budget, Pigeon is definitely a good choice. But if quality and durability is your priority, go for Philips.

General Care

Pigeon air fryer is fairly simple to clean and maintain. After use, soak the pan and the basket in hot soap water for half and hour and then scrub with a non-abrasive brush to clean the basket and pan.
Pigeon Air Fryer Review
For pan-less version of air fryer, keep aluminium foil beneath the basket to collect the excess oil and food particles that may drop underneath. Forget that and you will have to spend your next half an hour after cooking for scrubbing and cleaning the air fryer.
Note- Pigeon air fryers come in two model- Pigeon Super 2.2L with capacity of 2.2 litre and Pigeon Super3.2 of capacity 3.2 litres. The power consumption of these models are 1350W and 1500W respectively. Other than the higher capacity, there are no other difference between these two models. As Pigeon Super 3.2litre has a higher capacity, it is advisable to invest in it instead of Pigeon Super 2.2L.

Philips Air Fryer Review

Philips is the market leader in the air fryers segment world wide. The products they create are definitely a class apart. The Philips HD9220 Air Fryer promises and delivers healthy frying of food with 80% less fat using their patented rapid air technology.

Confused about how to choose an air fryer? This guide might help

Through this review, we will take a look at the features, pros and cons and general complaints and its solution.
(Note- The  difference between models HD9220 and HD9220/53 lies only in the color- the former being black and latter being white. All other features remain the same.)

Why We Love it?

  • Healthy Yet Tasty
The obvious benefit of having an air fryer is healthy fried food. Philips HD9220 delivers this promise spot on. But if you are expecting the same taste as that of deep frying, you will be disappointed. Rather, you can expect a healthier version of deep fried food. Through their patented rapid air technology, food is evenly cooked and you can attain the perfect browning characteristic of frying.
  • Versatile
There is a wide spread misconception that air fryer is best only for making French fries. This is far from truth. You can use an air fryer for grilling, roasting, frying and baking a wide variety of food. You might have an initial teething trouble to get well-cooked tasty food though. But you will overcome it once you get a hang of cooking with air fryer. You can find a few tips below that might help.
    Philips Air Fryer Review
  • Safe
Don’t you always dash away from the stove after putting a piece of fish in the pan for frying? Yes… Oil spatter would have burnt your hands at least once in your life. With Philips air fryer, that is the last thing you have to worry about. Air fryers in general are very safe as all cooking happens inside the insulated cooking chamber.
  • Easy To Use
Philips air fryer‘s controls are fairly easy and intuitive. You have a knob to adjust the temperature from 120 to 200 degree Celsius and another knob to set the timer for up to 30 minutes. However, being a mechanical timer, it runs even when you switch off the device. So if there is a power failure, you might want to check the timer immediately or else you will completely lose track of how long you have been cooking the food in it.
  • No odour and smoke
Your home is filled with strong smell and sometimes smoke while frying food, especially fish. As Philips air fryer has a filter in its exhaust system, only a pleasant smell of the food is emitted while the air fryer is working.

Pros

  • Quick
After pre-heating the air fryer for 3 minutes, we were able to cook a batch of fries for 4 persons in around 12 minutes. Most recipes in their recipe booklet can be cooked in around 30 minutes, which is convenient compared to cooking on stove top.
  • Great Design
Philips air fryer measures 38.4 x 28.7 x 31.5 cm( 7 kg) It is about the size of a food processor. The sleek design and finish is definitely elegant. The control knobs are easy to use and the basket is fixed to the pan and can be removed by pressing a button, making it safe too. Over all, the design is aesthetic as well as functional. Please note that as it weighs 7 kg, you will have to keep it on counter top itself. Placing it on top of oven to save space is not advisable.
    philips air fryer review

Cons

  • Low Capacity
Philips air fryer is suitable for a small family of 2-3 persons. It has a capacity of 800 gm. The basket measures 19cm square with 8 cm depth. For a larger family or for hosting party for a larger gathering, you will have to cook in batches. Compared to a deep fryer, it is a negative. However, if you generally cook on stovetop, this might not be a huge inconvenience as you would already be cooking in batches for a large gathering.
    philips air fryer review
  • Energy Consumption
Philips air fryer is not really an energy saving appliance. It has a wattage of 1400 W. Running it for 30 minutes consumes around 0.7 units of electricity.
  • Not hands off
Though the company claim that you can put the food inside the air fryer and set the temperature and time and leave it to take care of the rest of your household chores, that is not entirely right for best result. For getting evenly cooked, you will have to shake the basket every 10-15 minutes, especially with fries. It is also advisable to keep an eye on the food frequently for the first few uses till you get a hang of how the air fryer works.

General Complaints And Solution

  • Unable to cook beyond fries
A general complaint usually seen on shopping site reviews are that the device cannot be used for cooking anything beyond fries.
  • Uneven cooking
In order to ensure even cooking of food, shake the basket frequently. Philips Air fryer is not as hands-off as the companies claim.
Also, do not stuff the basket with too much food. The hot air has to pass and circulate through the food. So, try to cook at a time food of quantity 20-30% less than the mentioned capacity so that it is evenly cooked.
    Philips Air Fryer Review

Philips air fryer requires minimum maintenance. Cleaning is also easy. After removing the food remains from the basket and the pan, it needs to be soaked in hot soap water for 30 minutes before scrubbing with a non abrasive scrub. Take special care not to use an abrasive scrub as it will damage the non-stick costing on the pan and basket.
You can clean the outside of the air fryer using a damp cloth.
Sometimes, you will find that the exhaust system emits white smoke. This usually happens when you are cooking food with high fat content. In such a situation, take out the pan and the basket, keep the basket aside and cover it with aluminium foil and then wipe away the fat in the pan. After that, you can continue with the cooking as usual. Note that the pan and the basket will be hot. So, handle with care using oven mittens.

The Ultimate Guide To Buying Air Fryers

Air fryers are considered the next big thing in kitchen appliances. They promise guiltless indulging of fried food through healthy oil-less cooking.
With all the hype around Air fryer, every one wants to know if it is worth it.  So, through this guide, we will help you understand about all major aspects of air fryer, how it is a healthy alternative and an over view of the major brands of air fryers available.

What is an Air fryer?

Air fryer is one of the latest kitchen appliances launched in the market that promises and delivers a healthy alternative to deep-frying. The device circulates super heated air and cooks the food. The crispy layer typical of frying is produced by reaction of oil with the food triggered by the hot air. Philips has patented this technology by the name- Rapid Air Technology. Most other companies too use the same technology with a slight difference in order to avoid patent violation law suit.
guide buying air fryers
Companies selling air fryers claim that using air fryers, food can be cooked with just one Tbsp. of oil (80% less oil compared to traditional cooking methods)

How to Choose A Suitable Air Fryer?

Take care of the following aspects while buying an air fryer in order to have a trouble-free cooking experience.

  • Capacity
An air fryer might look spacious from outside. But that is not quite how it is inside. A typical air fryer with capacity of 2.2 litres has a basket of size 19cm x 19 cm with 8 cm depth. This is usually enough only for a family of 2-3 members. Hence, it is always advisable to buy a larger capacity ( 3 litre) air fryer.
  • Safety
Ensure that you buy an air fryer with safety features like sturdy durable handle, lock system for the basket, insulation in exterior handle, non-slip base, auto-shut off etc.
  • Temperature Setting
Right temperature could often be the cause of having a soggy chips instead of crispy and crunch ones. So, the higher the range of temperature adjustment, the better the device.

How does an Air fryer Work?

The air fryer has a heating element just above the cooking chamber and it radiates heat directly to the food from a close range. The mechanical fan above the heater pulls the air upwards through the heating chamber creating a strong vertical hot airflow. Through the sides of the chamber, the air is transported downwards and starfish like guide at the bottom helps the air move upward. Thus, the hot air is repeatedly circulated throughout the cooking chamber in order to evenly cook the food.
guide buying air fryers
The internal pressure is kept under control through an exhaust system that releases a small amount of air into the open air throughout the process. The steam and smoke pass through a filter, thus minimal smell is emitted in the process.

What all can you cook with an air fryer?

An air fryer is pretty versatile in its application. You can make French fries, make samosas, and fry different varieties of food in addition to baking cakes, cup cakes and muffins.

Pro Tips To Make The Best Out Of Your Air Fryer

  • Always shake the basket once or twice while cooking the food in order to get the food evenly cooked.
  • Do not overcrowd the basket with food as it will affect the air circulation resulting in food not getting cooked properly.
  • Apply oil to the basket before cooking so that food does not get stuck to it. This makes it easier to clean the basket also.
  • Pat dry any excess marination or liquid coating on food to avoid spattering and excess smoke.
  • If you are coating the food with breadcrumbs, apply oil to it and ensure that it is well applied on the food. If it crumbles off the food, the breadcrumbs could fly around and get stuck in the exhaust system.

General Complaints And Possible Solutions

The usual complaints about air fryers in general are given below. Some of the solutions suggested to overcome the problems are also listed along.

  • Unable to cook beyond fries
A general complaint usually seen on shopping site reviews are that the device cannot be used for cooking anything beyond fries. But that is not true.
You can also check the recipe book that comes along with most air fryers for ideas and inspiration.
For home-made snacks, add oil to the breadcrumbs for making it crispy.
Also take care to shake the basket frequently while cooking.

Benefits

  • Healthy Cooking
The obvious benefit of air fryer is healthy cooking owing to the fact that you can now consume fried food that has minimal oil content. Instead of dunking the food in oil, all you have to do now is just smear the food with oil so as to have the desirable browning while cooking.
  • Easy To Clean
You know how hard it is to clean oil and grease from a pan in which you have fried food. The basket and pan in an air fryer is made out of non-stick material. As minimal oil is used, cleaning is comparatively easy too. However, ensure that you do not scrub the basket and the pan with a non-abrasive brush.
  • Set and Leave
Most air fryers come with an in-built timer. So, you can set the timer and take care of the rest of your household chores and the air fryer will do its job in the meanwhile. However, keep a close watch on the air fryer for the first few times till you get a hang of using it.
  • Safety
When you fry food in oil on a stove, you always have the fear that food or oil could spatter and burn your hands. Well, that is the last thing that you have to fear about while using an air fryer because its advanced design and technology makes it absolutely safe for everyone.

Cons

  • Taste
Though companies claim that the food cooked with an air fryer tastes as good as deep-frying, a number of consumers say otherwise. As the famous chef Gordon Ramsay says, “Look – nothing is going to replace that deep-fried taste, so no, they don’t, But, the Air fryer uses a tablespoon of oil and the chips come out crisp on the outside and tender on the inside – they’re a healthier version, and they taste great.”
  • Space
Most models in the market have a capacity of around 800 to 1200 gm. This is well enough for a family with 2-4 members. But if you have a larger family or a number of guests coming, you will have to cook in separate batches.
  • Cooking Time
Well, this depends on the model of your air fryer and the food that you are cooking. But usually, it takes 10-15 minutes longer than cooking in a pan on a stovetop.
  • Energy consumption
Power consumed by most air fryers are in the range of 1400 Watts. So, running an air fryer for 30 minutes consumes around 0.7kWh (0.7 unit). That is not quite an energy saver.
  • Uneven Cooking
Some times in order to have the food evenly cooked, you may have to turn over the food by shaking the basket. Newer models come with an in-built food agitator.

General Care

  • An air fryer is easy to clean and maintain. Always spray the basket with oil so that food does not get stuck to it and it becomes easier to clean later on.
  • After use, you can clear off any food particles left and fill the pan with hot water and soap and leave the basket inside. After around 30 minutes, clean it with a non-abrasive scrub or sponge.
  • Take the basket and pan out for cleaning after 30 minutes of using the air fryer for it to cool down.

The Invention And Marketing

Air fryer is widely considered as an invention by Philips. However, it is only partially true. Air fryer is actually an invention of APDS, a small product development firm founded by Fred van der Weij. Unhappy with the results of a fat-free fryer that he bought seeing a TV commercial, he decided to work on creating a better appliance that could fry food with minimal oil.

By 2007, he had designed the air fryer that worked properly. But as he did not have the financial means or business insight to market the product, he tied up with Hans Brocker, who previously worked with Braun. They were initially unsuccessful in securing bank loans or investors to take off the project. Eventually, they developed a prototype with their Chinese partners. After filing for patent, they decided it would be better to sell the idea and approached Braun first. But they were not quite interested.

In the meanwhile, Philips had been trying to develop a healthy fryer since 2005. So, in 2009, Fred and Braun approached Philips with their technology. Subsequent to their meeting, a letter of intent was signed and an investigation phase began. They put the device through rigourous testing  for safety, technical specifications, applicability, and quality. The air fryer was finally launched in 2010 at the IFA and gained significant attention. Through licensing agreements, a number of other companies too have started producing and marketing air fryers world-wide.

The inventors are working on the possibilities of using commercial air fryers for professional kitchens. As Philips does not target the professional market, the licensing contract allows inventors to identify other markets, but royalties and profits have to be shared with Philips.

Major Brands

Philips obviously is the major brand that deals in Air fryers. A close second is T-fal who have recently introduced Acti fryer, which has a larger capacity and advanced features. Other brands are Avalon, Glip, Prestige, Havells, Kenstar etc.
