Why We Love it?
- Healthy Yet Tasty
The obvious benefit of having an air fryer is healthy fried food. Philips HD9220 delivers this promise spot on. But if you are expecting the same taste as that of deep frying, you will be disappointed. Rather, you can expect a healthier version of deep fried food. Through their patented rapid air technology, food is evenly cooked and you can attain the perfect browning characteristic of frying.
There is a wide spread misconception that air fryer is best only for making French fries. This is far from truth. You can use an air fryer for grilling, roasting, frying and baking a wide variety of food. You might have an initial teething trouble to get well-cooked tasty food though. But you will overcome it once you get a hang of cooking with air fryer. You can find a few tips below that might help.
Don’t you always dash away from the stove after putting a piece of fish in the pan for frying? Yes… Oil spatter would have burnt your hands at least once in your life. With Philips air fryer, that is the last thing you have to worry about. Air fryers in general are very safe as all cooking happens inside the insulated cooking chamber.
- Easy To Use
Philips air fryer‘s controls are fairly easy and intuitive. You have a knob to adjust the temperature from 120 to 200 degree Celsius and another knob to set the timer for up to 30 minutes. However, being a mechanical timer, it runs even when you switch off the device. So if there is a power failure, you might want to check the timer immediately or else you will completely lose track of how long you have been cooking the food in it.
- No odour and smoke
Your home is filled with strong smell and sometimes smoke while frying food, especially fish. As Philips air fryer has a filter in its exhaust system, only a pleasant smell of the food is emitted while the air fryer is working.
After pre-heating the air fryer for 3 minutes, we were able to cook a batch of fries for 4 persons in around 12 minutes. Most recipes in their recipe booklet can be cooked in around 30 minutes, which is convenient compared to cooking on stove top.
- Great Design
Philips air fryer measures 38.4 x 28.7 x 31.5 cm( 7 kg) It is about the size of a food processor. The sleek design and finish is definitely elegant. The control knobs are easy to use and the basket is fixed to the pan and can be removed by pressing a button, making it safe too. Over all, the design is aesthetic as well as functional. Please note that as it weighs 7 kg, you will have to keep it on counter top itself. Placing it on top of oven to save space is not advisable.
- Low Capacity
Philips air fryer is suitable for a small family of 2-3 persons. It has a capacity of 800 gm. The basket measures 19cm square with 8 cm depth. For a larger family or for hosting party for a larger gathering, you will have to cook in batches. Compared to a deep fryer, it is a negative. However, if you generally cook on stovetop, this might not be a huge inconvenience as you would already be cooking in batches for a large gathering.
- Energy Consumption
Philips air fryer is not really an energy saving appliance. It has a wattage of 1400 W. Running it for 30 minutes consumes around 0.7 units of electricity.
- Not hands off
Though the company claim that you can put the food inside the air fryer and set the temperature and time and leave it to take care of the rest of your household chores, that is not entirely right for best result. For getting evenly cooked, you will have to shake the basket every 10-15 minutes, especially with fries. It is also advisable to keep an eye on the food frequently for the first few uses till you get a hang of how the air fryer works.
General Complaints And Solution
- Unable to cook beyond fries
A general complaint usually seen on shopping site reviews are that the device cannot be used for cooking anything beyond fries. But that is not quite true. For the initial uses, you will have to keep a close watch on the food inside the air fryer and apply enough oil on the food to get the desired browning.
However, keep in mind that you cannot cook anything in liquid consistency in the air fryer. So, you might want to make solid batter for the food you cook in air fryer.
You can also check the recipe book that comes along with the appliance for ideas and inspiration.
- Uneven cooking
In order to ensure even cooking of food, shake the basket frequently. Philips Air fryer is not as hands-off as the companies claim.
Also, do not stuff the basket with too much food. The hot air has to pass and circulate through the food. So, try to cook at a time food of quantity 20-30% less than the mentioned capacity so that it is evenly cooked.
- Food loses moisture
Food usually gets dehydrated when you apply too less oil on the food or when you cook it for too long. Fish and meat has natural fat and hence the only reason why it loses moisture is because of over cooking. For fries, you will have to apply enough oil to ensure that they come out crispy on the outside and soft and tender inside. (Please note that applying too much oil will make the food lose its crispness too.)
Till you get a hang of it, keep a constant watch on the food you put in the air fryer to prevent burning and over cooking.
- Food is not crispy
Ensure that you have preheated the air fryer for 3 minutes.
Vegetables generally do not become crisp even in a deep fryer. Other than that, if you cook high fat content food, it will not be crispy enough.
Lightly brush meat and fish with oil.
For home made snacks, add oil to the breadcrumbs for making it crispy.
Also take care to shake the basket frequently while cooking.
For baking cake, bread, quiche, gratin and other delicious goodies.
